This study focused on the emergence of social media networks and traced the stages of development that these networks have known from their inception to the present day.
From a second angle, the study addressed the most important characteristics of social networking sites and focused mainly on the most widely used and widespread sites on the Internet, such as Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp….
It became clear from defining the concept of social media networks that the Term digital media has some kind of overlap with some other concepts, such as electronic media, new Media, and alternative media, which share characteristics in general.
The study recommends the necessity of clarifying the overlap, compatibility, and dissonance between new media terminology in general. In studying this topic, the researcher used the descriptive and analytical method, in addition to the historical method.
