(Study on the role of the Sufi order in Indonesia, socially and politically)

Sufism –especially tarekat– in the long story has experienced dynamic development. At the first time of the development, Sufism aimed to lead people to individual piety, to approach the only God, as a response and critique of the widespread deviation committed by the authorities. Then it develops to become social-political force and the supporter of economics force to oppose tyrannical authorities, so tasawuf (tarekat) as if became popular religion which continuously develops in the community. In this case, tasawuf (tarekat) is then not regarded as static and conservative teaching and religious practice, but it has dynamic role in developing the world.
